22 years in the making

It seems that since I have started this class my thoughts are consumed by HIV. Every week I think about what if I was HIV+ or what if one of my friends told me they were HIV+. I never thought so much about a disease that I thought would never be in my life. I was reading some articles and I came across one that was rather interesting. President Obama lifted a 22 year travel ban for people with HIV to enter the United States. Obama said the restrictions were 'rooted in fear rather than fact' and it is encouraging that America has finally moved away from such discriminatory measures. (Avert 2009) I think is a very good move on the part of the President and the United States government. I don't think that it is right that countries discriminate against people with HIV because sometimes people get infected in difficult circumstances. If we discriminate against people with HIV then why don't we discriminate against people with cancer or other diseases. I hope that this step of travel bans on people with HIV sets an example for other countries that may have this ban too.

  1. Wow that is really good that Obama did that I did an article a few weeks ago about how people with HIV were restricted in there travel. I was suprised at how many places would not allow people with HIV to enter their coutries, or apply for visas. I am glad Obama is making a change.

  2. I didnt even know about this. Wow. I'm feeling the same way HIV has consumed my life. I am happy to say that ever since I took this class I appreciate my brother so much more. I know what he feels and the thoughts that go through his mind.

  3. I agree with you in that this class has consumed most of my thoughts this semester.. and I also agree, if the people of the world, are going to discrminate against people with HIV, why not do it to people with cancer or other fatal diseases?

  4. This is an interesting article. I never knew of this ban. I do agree with you on lifting the ban. However, based on the economics of health, one could only wonder if the patients are allowed to enter the country, what would happen if these patients get sick while they are in the country. Just a thought. But thanks for the information I really didn't know this.

  5. I find myself like you consumed with thoughts of HIV and whenever I hear the words HIV or AIDS I automatically listen. My friend and I were talking about HIV and he was the one who told me that Obama lifted the ban.

  6. It is pretty awesome that the President took that a law like that in to consideration. I am sure there are quite a lot of people with HIV that did not get it because of their fault.
