More to learn

Black people with AIDS don't live as long as people of other races and ethnic groups with AIDS due to poverty and negative stigmas in the community.

I really enjoyed the book The Naked Truth. I'm glad that I chose that book. I think it is very brave of anyone to write a story about themselves and put their status out to everyone. You never know if people are going to judge you or not, but it sure can help a lot of people. Everyday I learn new things about HIV in this class. After last week and talking to my friends about HIV it surprised me that they were somewhat educated about it. I really don't question people in my generation so much as I do with ones younger than me. Our society has become so sexual. Everything revolves around it from commercials to even sporting events. I don't think we could ever imagine our lives if it didn't revolve around sex. I see now that more people are aware that protect is key to keeping our species from killing itself. We are killing ourselves from spreading diseases to killing our environment. We have to take care of ourselves and this planet for future generations to live healthy and happy lives.

  1. I have been talking to a few people about HIV, especially people in the health field just because I am curious how they feel about it. I have noticed that health majors in general are definitely more open minded than others. The whole "sexual" thing, it is so true. It is like, you say something and someone will take it in that sense. It is very worrysome for the coming generations because more and more people are being ignorant.

  2. I also chose The Naked Truth and really enjoyed it. I was shocked about how open she was about her story and feelings, and also thought she was extremely brave! Her story was very empowering and also showed how sexual our generation has become. She talked about sex as it was as common as talking about doing homework. It is crazy how things are changing. I definitely agree that everything is being resolved around sex.

  3. When I first told my friends about my class schedule they were all shocked that I was taking and HIV class. "Why would you want to learn about something like that?" they kept asking me. Honestly, I was taking it because it was on my course list of restricted electives, but I feel like I have gained so much valuable knowledge about the disease over the past few weeks. I read AIDS Memoir and I felt it to be compelling as well. Just looking at life through their eyes can really put the disease into a perspective that you can understand and possibly related to.

  4. You are right, everything in society today has become sexual like sports, commercials, music, magazines and definitely t.v. shows. I don’t like how society has become because it sends the wrong message to younger people and everything can’t always be about sex all the time. We are in fact killing ourselves by spreading this disease by having unprotected sex. We need to protect ourselves if we want to live a happy and healthy life while still engaging in sexual activities. All it takes is one mess up or careless move and that’s it, you’re infected!

  5. Desiree, please do not use colors as all it does it make it difficult for everyone to read. Thank goodness I have google reader and can read it on a white background.

Your generation can make a difference in what happens in this country. You can push for reality-based education in the schools. As my generation and the ones before it die off, your generation will be able to make changes. Elect people to congress who see the big picture rather than those that have only their self interest at heart.
